Traditional Bank President Bill Alverson, pictured here, recently became a Story Time Hero by participating in a special program with The Nest – Center for Women, Children and Families. The Nest is a Lexington based organization that provides services to women and families in crisis while working to prevent child abuse and neglect. Its goal is to help families develop the skills and habits needed for a healthier lifestyle.
One of the most important services they provide is free child care while parents go to school, look for a job or attend to other needs that will eventually lead to improved stability and well-being for the entire family. The Nest’s tender and understanding child care nurtures the children as they learn and develop. This service allows parents who have no support system for child care to go to important appointments, or take a needed break when stress becomes too much, while knowing that their child is in a safe, nurturing environment.
The Nest’s Story Time Hero program began in April. The program encourages local business leaders and community volunteers to bring a favorite childhood book to the center to read to the children and then donate. As a Story Time Hero, adults encourage children to develop a love for words that will help them learn throughout their lives. Earlier this summer, Bill Alverson was excited to take part by visiting the children and reading a favorite book to them.
“Reading to the children was such a rewarding experience,” said Alverson. “They were full of excitement, and a joy to be around. I hope to come back and share another story soon.”
